MACHINERY SAFETY CASE STUDY

The Secrets of Successful Risk Reduction

Note Risk Reduction rather than safeguarding, it encompasses more than just “safeguards”. Creating a zero risk environment is an impossible goal and those that pursue this impossibility invariably make risk reduction measures more likely to be defeated in a bid by employees to actually make something. We can however significantly reduce risk and get risk to an acceptable level by following a few simple steps.

DESIGN OUT

At the machinery design stage look to reduce operator interventions, and eliminate hazards.

INCLUDE OPERATORS

It is critical to involve the machine users in the risk assessment process – they know their job, what will hold them up and what makes their life easier.

REVIEW TASKS

Identifying tasks will help you identifiy the hazards. A task based risk assessment is a great approach. We hope to see more of this approach when ISO 12100 is revised.

MOTIVATION TO DEFEAT

Defeating of interlocks is a critical issue and is an outcome of implemeting poorly designed risk reduction measures. Check out the Stop-Defeating site for more guidance by clicking here
